San Ramon Soccer is pleased to announce the hiring of Fred Hsu as the Director of Coaching and Player Development, effective immediately. Hsu, who founded the National Soccer Academy (NSA) in 1992 which has selected, trained and coached over 1,000 players to compete in major National and International tournaments, brings to the position over 25 years of administrative, coaching, and playing experience at the youth, high school, college, and club levels. His NSA-EUROTOUR teams have won numerous international championships, including the Dana Cup, Gothia Cup (1600 teams from over 70 nations), Stockholm Cup, Oravais Cup, Dalecarlia Cup and Vildbjerg Cup. NSA teams have been finalist at the Surf Cup and have won at least one championship in the Nomads Showcase for each of the past six years.
“I am excited with this opportunity and look forward to help build San Ramon Soccer into one of the best clubs for youth development in the country, says Fred Hsu. I encourage members to embrace the NSA motto “Strive for Excellence, Enjoy the Process and Good Results will Follow”. We will work together to create excellent environments for our youth. The game is for the players.”
Fred, a current USSF “A” licensed teaching professional and National Licensed since 1981, began coaching in 1981 as an assistant at San Francisco State, later moving on to the University of California-Davis in 1991 and 1992. He has had tremendous success with coaching and managing teams with kids from many different states within the US, including as Head Coach of the NSA-American Eagle Team that participated in the MUNDIALITO 1998 (World Youth Soccer Championship for boys age 15) held in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Fred has coached ODP State Select teams 1988 - 1993, and won several Nike Friendship Cups. He was a Senior Staff instructor for CYSA and also taught courses for HYSA (Hawaii Youth Soccer Association).
“The club directors are very excited by the innovative programs Fred has planned for San Ramon Soccer,” says club President Roy Nelson. In addition to creating unique education and training opportunities for the coaching staff, Fred plans to forge a club that emphasizes player development in a fun environment, where players of all skill levels are challenged and encouraged to reach their highest potential. Under Fred’s direction, San Ramon Soccer intends to offer support programs on such diverse topics as injury prevention, nutrition, sports psychology and specialized programs for the college-bound athlete, including identifying the right college opportunity and dealing with the recruitment process.”
Fred is a graduate of UC Berkeley with undergraduate and graduate degrees in Engineering, and has a wife and three kids (all having graduated or currently attending college). He has published several articles, including “Don’t coach ‘Just Kick It Soccer’” (Soccer California 1991), “Coach responds to anti-kickball article, offer new solution” (Soccer California, April 1992) and “Our Author Diagnoses Well-Meaning Adult Syndrome” (Soccer California, August 1992).
